How To: Home Wash & Dry For Bedding

Washing your bedding at home is easy with a few simple steps.

  • Prior to any home washing be sure to check the product care labels on the bedding.
  • You can also checkout www.beddingcare.com where we show videos on product care.
  • Consider using pillow protectors for pillows and duvet covers for comforters as they help keep your investment lasting longer and are washed in place of the item on the inside.
  • Most dry cleaning chemicals will ruin the filling whether it be down or down alternative. In the event your home washer and dryer are too small you can send to a dry cleaner/laundromat and have them wash BUT DO NOT DRY CLEAN the items.

For Pillows:

  • Place one or two pillows maximum in the washing machine with a teaspoon of Dawn liquid dish soap in the liquid soap dispenser. The special soap is great at removing oils which will help to keep the fabric and filling clean.
  • Wash on medium to high capacity on warm or hot heat setting.
  • Remove from the washing machine and immediately place in the dryer.
  • Dry for a few to several full high heat cycles to make sure the inside is bone dry. Usage of a dryer ball is helpful as well as manually removing, fluffing and placing back in the dryer between cycles.
  • Remove from dryer, fluff by hand as needed and place inside a pillow protector and then into your pillowcase.
  • In addition to washing your pillows this video shows how to fluff and care for them for optimal enjoyment.

For Mattress Pads & Mattress Protectors:

  • Place one mattress pad maximum in the washing machine with a teaspoon of Dawn liquid dish soap in the liquid soap dispenser. The special soap is great at removing oils which will help to keep the fabric and filling clean. If your washing machine has a central agitator DO NOT proceed and instead send to the dry cleaner/laundromat  to be cleaned. The central agitator will rip apart the skirt material so please avoid.
  • Wash on medium to high capacity on warm or hot heat setting.
  • Remove from the washing machine and immediately place in the dryer.
  • Dry for a one to two medium heat cycles to make sure the inside is bone dry. Usage of a dryer ball is helpful as well as manually removing, fluffing and placing back in the dryer between cycles. If the mattress pad is waterproof additional drying time might be needed.
  • Remove from dryer, fluff by hand as needed and place back on your bed.

For Blankets & Comforters:

  • Depending on the size of your washing machine you should be able to fit a twin, twin xl or full size comforter no problem. Queen, king or cal king size are usually too big for home machines. In those cases proceed to take them to a dry cleaner for laundry - DO NOT DRY CLEAN.
  • Place one comforter maximum in the washing machine with a teaspoon of Dawn liquid dish soap in the liquid soap dispenser. The special soap is great at removing oils which will help to keep the fabric and filling clean.
  • Wash on high capacity on warm or hot heat setting.
  • Remove from the washing machine and immediately place in the dryer.
  • Dry for a few to several full high heat cycles to make sure the inside is bone dry. Usage of a dryer ball is helpful as well as manually removing, fluffing and placing backing the dryer between cycles.
  • Remove from dryer, fluff by hand as needed and place inside a duvet cover if desired or use right away.

For Feather Beds & Fiber Beds:

  • DO NOT launder at home. The items are too big and will break your machine.
  • Prevention is key - consider using a waterproof mattress pad or mattress protector on top of the feather or fiber bed.

PRO Tips:

  • My comforter or blanket is wrinkly, can I use an iron? Yes you can use an iron on the fabric - that is actually how we make them look so pretty for photography. Obviously, start on the lower setting and use steam to help make smooth.
  • The idea of using Dawn dish soap seems weird to me - can't I just use Tide or some other laundry soap? Yes of course you can. Remember the Exxon Valdez oil spill and what the emergency teams used to clean the birds - it was Dawn soap.
